Parent and caregiver involvement

The school actively encourages a close working relationship between parents, students and teachers to enhance all aspects of school life.  Parents are always encouraged by the school to participate in their child's education. Parent teacher interviews, a comprehensive assessment package and the introduction of a 3 way parent-teacher-student interviews are all intended to promote a strong, collaborative community.

To the further benefit of all students, many parents contribute their skills and support in a variety of areas. Assistance with specific programs such as reading, mathematics, technology, gross motor, debating, sports activities, excursions, music activities, library cataloguing and school banking.  Operation of the canteen, clothing pool, school band, child care (OOSH), book club and grounds maintenance are all parent dependent and have been very competently managed this year.

The School P&C Association                                                TOP

There’s no doubt that Mt Kuring-gai is a great place to be, whether you’re a student, parent or teacher. The P&C is part of a strong community that works together with the teachers of the school to make sure this tradition continues.  Social events are one way we try to bring the community together.  By creating friendships between parents and between teachers and parents, everyone works together to help all students reach their potential.  We recently held a school bush dance that attracted over 250 people - not bad for a school with 170-odd students.

And yes, the P&C also raises much-needed funds for the school, but we try and link fundraising to specific goals rather than for it’s own sake. Sometimes we manage to have a little fun with it too!

The monthly P&C meetings are a chance to find out what’s going on in the school.  There is always a member of the teaching staff there to provide feedback on the school’s direction and upcoming events.  Parent projects, ideas and concerns also get a good hearing.  Interested in having a further look?  Great - we’d love to see you!

Meetings are held at 8pm on the first Wednesday of every month during term-time.

Ross
President, P&C Association

School Auxiliary                                                                                                                                         TOP

School is fun!  This is a time when not only the children have the opportunity to make new friends, but we, as parents also have that opportunity.

At the school, we meet in the playground or work together in various ways to support the school.

Mt Kuring-gai School Auxiliary, under the umbrella of the P&C meets on the first Monday of each month at 9.30 am in the staffroom.  The school principal attends the meetings to give a report, and is happy to discuss any questions we have.  Babies and toddlers are welcome to come with you to the Auxiliary meetings.

The Auxiliary is responsible for a variety of services and activities within the school, including:

  • Clothing Pool

  • Canteen

  • Cake Day

  • Book Club

  • Mothers & Fathers Day Stalls

  • Orientation Day morning tea, clothing pool and child-minding.

  • Morning teas for various occasions.

  • Fundraising

We are lucky at Mt Kuring-gai to have so many wonderful people in the school community who help out in so many ways.  The old saying 'Many hands make light work' is certainly true.  If you’d like to be involved, come along to a meeting, or just let us know if you can help in some way for an hour here or there.  Any contribution we can each make is certainly appreciated by the students, families and staff at Mt Kuring-gai.

President, MKPS Auxiliary

Fundraising                                                                                                                    TOP

The school's P&C Association coordinates a number of fundraising activities throughout the year to raise money for the enhancement of school facilities and programs which might otherwise not be provided due to funding constraints. Families are encouraged to support these activities to ensure we are able to continue to offer the high standard of resourcing which is of benefit to all students.

Our annual 'fun raising' events are:

  • Stewart House

  • The Biggest Morning Tea' for Cancer research

  • Trivia Night

  • Our Mountain Festival

Our Mountain Festival                                                                                                                    TOP

Our Mountain Festival is a fun fair or fete which is steeped in history.  It was created by the Ladies Auxiliary from within the Mt. Kuring-gai Residents Group in the year 1950.  The purpose for the community event was to raise money to purchase Harwood Hall, as well as to strengthen community spirit.  It was first held on Saturday 7th October 1950, but was originally organised to be held in September.  The event ran from 2.30pm and some of the attractions were;

  • best dressed doll

  • lucky dips

  • funniest mask

  • chocolate wheel

  • best plate of scones

  • stalls, stalls, stalls

  • best sponge cakes

  • raffles

  • prizes for shooting out candle flames with a water pistol!

Our Mountain Festival is usually held towards the end of the school year and is a bi-annual event. (every 2 years)

The way that we run the Mountain festival is not that different to back in the old days.  The 'muster' usually starts around 10am and usually finishes 'in a cloud of dust' around 3-4pm.  The purpose in holding the Mountain Festival is to raise money for Mt. Kuring-gai Public School P&C, as well as to promote community spirit and showcase our wonderful school! An example of what we spend the money on would be our school under cover learning area (COLA).

Some of the attractions at Our Mountain Festival, for all you country folk, are:

  • Second hand book stalls

  • Clothing new & old

  • Toys new and old

  • Plants galore

  • Pocket money stalls

  • Art & craft

  • Food to suit most hungry country folk

  • Local artist & artwork

  • Displays from local services eg: the Hornsby Shire

  • Council & Rural Fire Brigade

  • The Mt. Kuring-gai Residents Group Stall

  • Snow cones

  • The good ‘ol sausage sandwich & egg and bacon roll

  • Country roast spit rolls from the village Butchery

  • Jumping castles

  • Drinks galore ‘cause its real thirsty work'

Now, down to the really fun stuff!  There are go-cart rides, pet shows, dog obedience displays, duck or chook lotto, 'go fish for a fish' game (real country Australian fish), pony rides, throw the sponge at the teacher/parent/student leader game, children’s craft activities, and lots more surprises which we add on each time a new Mountain Festival comes around. A good ‘ol fashioned country family fun day out! It is run entirely by the parents and children of our school and the local community. Hope to see you all 'rounding up some fun' at our next Mt. Kuring-gai Public School Mountain Festival.

The Bush Gambol                                                                                                                                   TOP

The Bush Gambol is a bi-annual event organised by parents for families at the Mt Kuring-gai School.  The Bush Gambol is a leisurely bush walk from Mt Kuring-gai to Apple Tree Bay at Bobbin Head for a picnic and/or barbeque. The day gives parents a great opportunity to meet and socialise with other parents outside the school playground. Come along or help organise the next one for a fun family day out.

The Book Club                                                                                                                                     TOP

A Book Club for students, run by parents, operates at our school. Book brochures are sent home with students and orders may then be returned to the school within a specified period. Orders are delivered to students when they are returned to the school. Whilst the school receives bonus books from the purchases, there is no obligation to buy.

The Canteen                                                                                                                                        TOP

Mt Kuring-gai School Canteen operates on Monday during first term and fourth term and on Monday and Thursday during second and third term.  Its operation depends solely on volunteers working on a roster basis.  If you are able to assist it would be very much appreciated.  Students are asked to bring their lunch order written on a paper bag together with their name, class and correct money and place it in the 'Lunch Order' bin outside the office before 9.30am. The Canteen is open at recess and the first half of lunch for the purchases of drinks, ice blocks and snack foods.  A canteen price list is available from the School Office.  All proceeds from the Canteen are used for learning resource material for children.

Grounds Maintenance                                                                                        TOP

Mt Kuring-gai school is fortunate to have fantastic grounds in a bush setting for our children to play.  To maintain the high standard of our school grounds parents are asked to assist with the grounds maintenance.  Its only twice a year and we need your help to trim the trees and scrubs, weed and mulch the gardens, and remove excess leaves.  Parents involved make the day enjoyable and fun, so come along to the next grounds maintenance day and help to keep our school beautiful
