student attendance                                                                           TOP

Following are guidelines provided by the Department of Education and Training

Responsibilities of the principal

Principals are legally responsible for maintaining accurate records of student attendance. When reasons for absences are provided to the school by parents, principals are accountable for their decision to record a student’s absence as justified. Principals may decline to accept as satisfactory an explanation for an absence and will record that absence as unjustified. Principals may request medical certificates or other documentation when absences explained as being due to illness are frequent or prolonged.

Responsibilities of parents

The Education Act 1990 requires that parents (including carers) ensure that children of compulsory school age are enrolled at and regularly attend school, or are registered with the Office of the Board of Studies NSW for home schooling. The New South Wales Department of Education and Training may take legal action against parents and carers who do not send their children to school without a valid reason.

What is a justified reason for being absent from school?

Justified reasons for absences may include the student:

having an unavoidable medical or dental appointment (preferably, these should be made after school or during holidays)

being required to attend a recognised religious holiday

being required to attend an exceptional or urgent family circumstance (such as attending a funeral)

being sick, or having an infectious disease.

Absences for reasons such as some of the following may not be justified:

Shopping

Sleeping in

Working around the house

Minding younger siblings and other children

Minor family events such as birthdays

Hair cuts.

It is important to realise that parents (including carers) may be prosecuted if children have recurring unjustified absences from school.

Keeping the school informed

If your child has to be absent from school, it is important to tell the school and provide a reason for the absence. To explain an absence parents and carers may:

Telephone or visit the school

Full absences require a note. Partial absences can be registered in the partial absence log. On-going partial absences require a note/written documentation.

Whenever possible, parents and carers are encouraged to provide an explanation for absences before the absences occur. The principal of the school has the right to question parents’ requests for their child to be absent from school. They may also question an explanation given for a child’s absence from school.

Holidays

Parents and carers are encouraged not to withdraw their children from school for family holidays. If this is necessary parents should discuss these absences with the principal and may be requested to apply for a ‘Certificate of Exemption ‘from attendance at school. This will ensure

that these absences are not permanently recorded as unjustified. When considering applications for Certificates of Exemption, principals may consider a variety of factors. These may include compassionate reasons, family reunions, the educational merits of the holiday and agreement for the student to complete assignments while on holiday. In some cases application for Distance Education may be more appropriate than seeking an exemption from school attendance

Arriving at school and class on time

ensures that students don’t miss out on the important learning activities scheduled early in the day when the students are most alert

helps students learn the importance of punctuality and routine

gives students time to greet their friends before class and therefore reduces the opportunity for classroom disruption.

Lateness is recorded as partial absence and must be explained by parents or carers in the same way as other forms of absence. Students who do not arrive before students enter class must attend the office to fill in a late slip.

school uniform                                                                                         TOP

The desirability of students wearing a school uniform has long been recognised by parents, teachers and students at Mt Kuring-gai Public School. We believe that the wearing of uniforms:

1. gives the child the feeling of being part of, and belonging to this school;

2. assists in the maintenance of school tone and good conduct;

3. reduces to a minimum the distinctions between children.

While it is not intended that any child be placed in a position of embarrassment because he/she is unable to wear a school uniform, it is anticipated that parents will ensure that children always be attired in correct school uniform. Should your family be experiencing financial difficulties which prevent the purchase of uniform items, please see the Principal as Student Assistance funds may be available to assist.

student safety                                                                               TOP

Early arrival
As the legal time for teachers to be on duty is 9.00am, the school cannot accept any responsibility for students before this time. It may be that no teachers will be present before 9.00am and therefore no one is available to supervise students.  You are therefore strongthly urged to plan your family's morning so that children arrive between 9.00am and 9.25am. The responsibility for the safety of any child who arrives before 9.00am rests with the parent.

Staff carpark
For the safety of the children, parents are requested not to use the staff carpark at anytime.

Safety on the streets
Please ensure your child knows safety rules for travelling to and from school as a pedestrian or cyclist. In particular please ensure they know:

  • How to cross the road with safety.

  • How to travel safely on buses - particularly the care needed when stepping off the bus.

  • Not to step out from behind parked cars or buses.

Please do not call your child from across the street as they are likely to run across to you without looking to see if it is safe.

bicycles                                                                                         TOP

Students in years 5 and 6 are welcome to ride their bicycles to and from school with their written parent permission. They must wear safety helmets and must walk their bicycle when in the playground. Bike racks are located outside the the school Office and bicycles must be chained to these racks.

lost property                                                                              TOP

Items which are misplaced by students at school are placed in the lost property container located on the Kindergarten verandah. If your child loses an item, please follow it up with the school as quickly as possible. Unclaimed items are eventually given to the clothing pool.

school counsellor                                                                                TOP

Each school has, as a permanent member of staff, a school counsellor, who visits the school for one day per fortnight. The counsellor's role in the school is to identify learning problems which may have developed, and to give advice to the class teacher, and to parents about the ways in which these problems may be met. Individual testing can be carried out by the counsellor on request from the Principal (and with the parents permission), if some learning or behavioral problem appears evident. Parents may make an appointment to see the counsellor, should they wish to discuss anything relevant to their child's education. Appointments can be made through the Principal.

religious instruction                                                                          TOP

Religious instruction is given to students for 30 minutes on Wednesdays. Most local churches support the school and provide teachers during this time. A teacher is provided to supervise those students who do not participate. Students are expected to maintain a high level of behaviour during these lessons. Representatives of the churches take two separate groups - one for Catholic children and one for those from Protestant churches. Each family is free to choose which group their children will attend.

medications                                                                                          TOP

It is school policy at Mt Kuring-gai that designated staff only will dispense certain long term medications or medications to students who cannot function without them. We do not, as a rule, dispense drugs such as antibiotics or other short term medications. If your doctor prescribes treatment for a short term illness, please seek advice so that your child can be given this medication before or after school. Where the Principal's permission has been granted for the dispensing of medication at school, this needs to be sent in an appropriate container clearly labelled with the student's name, details of the medication and dosage, unless the medication is supplied in a form which renders this impractical and/or unsafe. You will be asked to complete an indemnity form if your child is to receive medication at school.

accidents                                                                                                TOP

Parents will be advised as quickly as possible of an accident to their child. Should it be necessary, an ambulance will be called or the child taken to the hospital if parents cannot be contacted. Please ensure we have a contact number which is up to date.  Student are expected to report accidents and serious incidents immediately to the nearest teacher on duty.

student banking                                                                                                                                          TOP

Student banking is available to any student within the school. The service is operated by parents on a voluntary basis in conjunction with the Commonwealth Bank. Student banking is collected on Wednesday.
